In a speech during the opening session of the Marrakech Parliamentary Economic Forum for the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf region, Rene Hernandez, who is also president of the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly, stressed “the need to respect the sovereignty of states and non-interference in their internal affairs, as well as the importance of peaceful solutions based on dialogue.”
The speaker also praised the importance the Kingdom attaches to South-South cooperation, noting in this context the strong relations between the Central American Parliament and the Moroccan Parliament “which has become a model for South-South parliamentary relations.” He mentioned the signing of the joint declaration of the Euromediterranean-Gulf Parliamentary Economic Forum.
He stressed the signing of a joint declaration between the Council of Advisors and a number of regional and regional parliaments of Latin America and the Caribbean, which aims to establish the Morocco-Latin America and Caribbean Economic Parliamentary Forum as a space “that allows our countries and our peoples to deal with a range of challenges they face,” adding that South-South cooperation has become a “strategic choice” for countries in the two regions to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
As an observer at the Central American Parliament, Morocco has launched initiatives on climate change, women's rights, migration and other topics, Hernandez said, stressing that “the future of our regions is based on strategic integration and effective management of international cooperation, as well as the intensification of efforts between our various parliaments.”
It is noteworthy that this edition of the forum, organized by the Council of Counselors and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, aims to explore the main challenges and opportunities facing the global economy, especially in the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions, with a special focus on legislative work and the role of parliamentarians in achieving the desired change.
It also aims to engage political and economic leaders, public and private sector actors, as well as representatives of academia and civil society, in diagnosing issues and exploring appropriate solutions and possible alternatives to develop economic and trade cooperation and enhance the flow of investments between the countries of the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions.
