Speaking at a symposium organized by the Faculty of Legal, Economic and Social Sciences in Tangier under the theme “The Sahara is Moroccan Land,” Mr. Lenaert explained that, through the diplomatic choices of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco has been able— with firmness and wisdom— to mobilize the international community and a number of major powers in support of the autonomy initiative it presented in 2007.
Mr. Lenaert, a lawyer and honorary judge, added that within this framework, Morocco has implemented a series of initiatives aimed at promoting socio-economic development and improving the living conditions of the population in the southern provinces of the Kingdom.
After recalling Morocco’s rich history spanning several centuries, the Belgian human rights advocate emphasized that the issue of the Moroccan Sahara falls within this historical framework of legitimate national unity — a fact confirmed by both historical realities and contemporary diplomacy.
Mr. Lenaert also commended the ongoing development that Morocco is witnessing under the wise leadership of His Majesty the King, as well as the various projects launched by His Majesty, which benefit all regions of the Kingdom.
He stated that “in many respects, Morocco is a model country for the world, thanks to its progress and resilience,” noting that the Kingdom “has been working for several years—at an accelerated pace—to develop its Sahara.”
He added that Morocco has become a major regional power in Africa and the Arab world, and a first-rate strategic partner for the West in various fields.
