|Moroccan Sahara: Kingdom’s decisions are "sovereign and irrevocable" (Mezouar)

Morocco welcomes positive position by members of the Security Council who have not yielded to the pressures to get them involved in this confusion

he Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and the Minister of Interior, in the presence of the Minister Delegate to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation held, on 24 March 2016 in Rabat, a consultation meeting with leaders and representatives of political parties and central labour bodies, on the latest developments of the national cause following the latest blunders of the United Nations Secretary General.

The Minister recalled, first and foremost, that the decisions taken by the Kingdom of Morocco regarding the departure of members of the civilian staff-and particularly the political-of the MINURSO, are responsible and proportional decisions taking into consideration the seriousness of the blunders of the UN Secretary General, Mr. Ban KI MOON, during his visit to Tindouf and Algiers.

He underlined that the decisions of the Moroccan government are sovereign and irrevocable and derive their force and legitimacy from national consensus and the unconditional support of all components of the Moroccan people.

Mr. Mezouar stressed that Morocco remains committed in its cooperation with the military component of the MINURSO, within the framework of its attributed mandate. In this regard, the contacts between the Royal Armed Forces and the Military Command of the MINURSO, are continuous and uninterrupted to this day. The contacts are maintained on the field between the Royal Armed Forces and the military component of the MINURSO, in order to ensure the maintenance of the cease-fire under normal conditions.

The Minister added that Morocco expressed, in several occasions, its disposal to offer the logistical support so as to allow the military component of the MINURSO to carry out its duties within its mandate in good conditions.

Furthermore, the contacts with the Special Representative of the Secretary General, Mrs. BOLDUC, are being carried on in a normal and continuous manner.

On this basis, and within the respect of the decisions that it has taken, Morocco remains open to constructive, responsible and unconditional dialogue, in a spirit of mutual respect. Such dialogue must, on the one part, not ignore the reasons of the current situation and, on the other part, rebuild the trust and save the political process weakened by the blunders of Mr. Ban KI MOON.
