|Two Italian NGOs Request Clarifications on Diversion of Aid by Algeria and Polisario

The scandal of the diversion by Algeria and the "polisario" of food aid intended for the populations held against their will in the Tindouf camps has experienced a new twist in Italy after two human rights associations called for clarification on this matter.

The associations "Nessuno tocchi Caino" and "Life Odv" urge the international community to clarify the fate of the funds allocated for food aid and misappropriated by Algeria and the "polisario".

Domenico Letizia, a member of the Board of Directors of the human rights NGO "Nessuno tocchi Caino", stated that "the aid in question amounts to 105 million euros between 1994 and 2004".

This situation, which he described as "very serious", should, in his view, "lead the international community to reflect on the alarm bells that Morocco has been sounding for decades".

For his part, Elio De Rosa, president of the association for the defense of Human Rights and destitute people "Life Odv", said that "the diversion of humanitarian aid intended for people who really need it is shameful".

"Not only is the human tragedy of women and children living in disastrous conditions compounded as a result of this situation, but there is a threat to instability due to arms purchases with funds that should have been earmarked for humanitarian aid," he stressed.

The statements of these two officials are part of an article devoted to this issue by the Italian website www.informazione.campania.it, echoing the denunciations by several MEPs of the misappropriation of food aid intended for the populations held against their will in Tindouf.

According to the Italian website, "immediate action must be taken to control European aid diverted by polisario and Algerian militias".

Stressing that "the whole affair in the polisario-run camps seems to be the result of an international scam to buy arms", the website pointed out that "the purpose of the aid was humanitarian and not for the purchase of arms".
