The position of the Spanish government in support of the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco to settle the Sahara issue is a "sovereign decision," Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, stated on Monday

The Jordanian writer and author, Mustafa Al-Qurna, considered that Algeria’s hostility towards Morocco finds its explanation in the positive momentum witnessed by the Moroccan autonomy proposal in the Sahara.

Support for Morocco's autonomy plan in the Sahara, presented by the Kingdom in April 2007 to achieve a final settlement of the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, was widely echoed during the closed-door UN Security Council meeting held on Wednesday.

The UN Security Council will hold, this Wednesday in New York, its semi-annual closed-door consultations meeting on the Moroccan Sahara issue, with the participation of the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, and the Special Representative for the Sahara and head of MINURSO, Alexander Ivanko.

Spain's new position on the Moroccan Sahara has "pulverized" the "nicely woven and conspiracy-based" narrative used by some Spanish media hostile to Morocco, said strategic studies expert Lahcen Haddad.
