The United States continues to support a “peaceful, sustainable and mutually agreed upon solution” to the Sahara issue, said on Thursday U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton following a meeting with her Algerian peer Mourad Medelci.

The collusion between the Polisario and the terrorist group of Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), as evidenced by the kidnapping of Western nationals in Tindouf, is part of an extremist web that threatens the stability of the Maghreb, the Sahel and Africa as a whole, warns a study published by the US think tank, Atlantic Council.

In a speech to the nation Sunday evening, marking the 36th anniversary of the Green March, His Majesty King Mohammed VI said that the Moroccan Sahara will be a model for advanced regionalization, implying a democratic election of its instances and a large transfer of powers and resources from the center to the regions, and providing bodies for regional and national solidarity, social upgrading and human development.

"Morocco has proposed constructive ideas. We consider the autonomy proposal a possible solution" to settle the Sahara issue, said Monday in Rabat, US. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman.
