Union of Comoros Commemorate Third Anniversary of the Opening of First Diplomatic Representation of an African Country in Laayoune.

The program of this celebration, which was hosted by the Higher School of Technology in Laayoune December 17-19, and organized under the slogan “Scientific Diplomacy for Development”, included the organization of a group of sports and scientific events and artistic performances that reflect the rich cultural heritage of the Comoros.
This celebration aims to highlight the importance of diplomatic, scientific and economic relations between Morocco and the Republic of the Union of the Comoros, which in December 2019 opened a Consulate General in the capital of the Moroccan Sahara.

In a speech on the occasion, Ambassador of the Republic of the Union of the Comoros in Rabat, Yahya Mohamed Elias, affirmed that the celebration of this anniversary in Laayoune reflects once again his country's firm support for the Moroccan Sahara and the territorial integrity of the Kingdom.

Mr. Elias indicated that this anniversary highlights the strength of the fraternal relations between the two friendly countries and peoples, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and President of the Union of the Comoros Ghazali Osmani, considering that this diplomatic presence promises a prosperous future for the historical friendship between the two countries.

He praised the role of Moroccan universities in training Comorian students, noting that they will be ambassadors of the Kingdom to the Union of the Comoros.

Consul General of the Union of the Comoros in Laayoune, Said Omar Said Hassan, recalled the “steadfast and unequivocal” position of the Union of the Comoros on the issue of the territorial integrity of the Kingdom and Moroccan Sahara.

Mr. Saeed Hassan indicated that the Consulate General of his country has chosen proximity diplomacy to make this cooperation between the two countries practical and tangible through bilateral partnership agreements.

He added that university institutions in the southern provinces include about fifty students from the Union of the Comoros.

The program of activities for this celebration included the organization of a meeting that included a set of axes on “scientific diplomacy for the benefit of development”, “challenges of migration and peace”, and “the stakes of new smart city technology”, in addition to the signing of a specific memorandum of understanding aimed at promoting scientific research between the Faculty of Science. in Tetouan, affiliated to Abdelmalek Saadi University, and the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of the Comoros.

Under this agreement, signed by the Consul General of the Union of the Comoros in Laayoune and the Dean of the Faculty of Sciences in Tetouan Abdellatif Makram, the two institutions undertake to cooperate in the fields of training, supervision and research through educational activities (seminars, training, forums), in which professors and researchers from the two institutions participate in defining topics for master's theses and doctoral dissertations, and facilitating the registration of master's students and researchers in the doctoral corps from both institutions.

This celebration was marked by the presence of the Wali of the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region, governor of the Laayoune region, Abdeslam Bakrat, head of the territorial commune of Laayoune Moulay Hamdi Ould Errachid, accredited general consuls of Laayoune and Dakhla, in addition to academics and a number of elected officials and civil society actors.
