|Helsinki: Meeting Hghlights Autonomy Plan “only solution” to Regional Dispute over Moroccan Sahara

A conference debate highlighted, Thursday in Helsinki, the Moroccan autonomy plan, “the one and only solution” to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

The meeting, organized by the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Finland, on the occasion of the celebration of the Independence Day and the Green March, saw the participation of personalities from various political, academic, diplomatic and media backgrounds, who emphasized the relevance of the Moroccan autonomy plan and debated the different aspects of the Moroccan Sahara issue.
Speaking on this occasion, the Moroccan ambassador in Helsinki, Mohamed Achgalou, reviewed the genesis of the Moroccan plan for autonomy in the southern provinces within the framework of the sovereignty of the Kingdom, noting that the preeminence of this plan has been recognized since its formalization in 2007 as ''credible, serious and realistic''.

He also underlined ''the diplomatic successes encountered by this plan, thanks to the enlightened Vision of HM King Mohammed VI'', emphasizing ''the surge of support and positive appreciation of this plan among the European countries, increasingly convinced of the relevance of this initiative as the only solution to this artificial conflict.

The diplomat highlighted the values of peace and reconciliation rooted in Morocco, which offers “a model of proactive development and an opportunity that the other parties to the conflict refuse to seize”.

Mr. Achgalou also addressed "the catastrophic situation" in Tindouf camps, insisting on the need to make a clear distinction between, on the one hand, the southern provinces of the kingdom, "open, prosperous, free and duly represented by their elected representatives', and, on the other hand, ''Tindouf camps barricaded in the middle of the Algerian desert in a lawless situation unique in the world''.

For his part, the Finnish writer and political advisor, Risto Huvila, underlined “the need for Europe to reconsider the conflict around the Moroccan Sahara through a new perspective”.

He called for “defending the political solution represented by the autonomy plan and to support without delay the efforts of Morocco as a safe and reliable neighbor and partner of Europe”.

Faith Mkweisha, professor at the University of Helsinki, pointed out the rejection by Algeria and the Polisario of autonomy and the round table process. “There are malicious considerations which block the opening of the only way out for women and girls in order to free themselves from the long-standing blockade in Tindouf camps,” she noted.

In this regard, she deplored the exploitation of women and children in the Tindouf camps for separatist and propagandist purposes. These acts represent, according to the academic, “a systematic violation of international law and a risk for the entire region”.

The Finnish political expert and journalist Anterro Eerola highlighted "the conformity" of the Moroccan autonomy plan with international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter, stressing that this plan is "to be even to ensure a better future for the people of the region.

This meeting was also marked by a tribute paid by the Kingdom's embassy in Finland to members of the Moroccan diaspora, in recognition of their efforts to strengthen human and social ties between the Moroccan and Finnish people.
