|NGOs Denounce Grave Violations of Refugees' Rights in Tindouf Camps
Two non-governmental organizations denounced on Tuesday in Geneva the grave violations of the rights of refugees in the Tindouf camps, southwest of Algeria, amid the silence of the international community.
The African Network for Development and Governance for Human Rights, in its speech during the general debate on the update of the report of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, within the framework of the 55th session of the Human Rights Council, denounced the "silence of the international community regarding the atrocities committed with impunity" against Sahrawis detained in the Tindouf camps, south of Algeria, under the influence of the Polisario armed militias and the Algerian army.
They "commit the worst atrocities against Sahrawis, especially human rights defenders and social media activists who dare to condemn the crimes committed by these militias, including extrajudicial executions, enforced disappearances, rape, child recruitment, slavery and the misappropriation of humanitarian aid," it said.
The organization expressed its deep concern about this situation, considering that "despite these serious violations committed in the camps on Algerian territory, neither of the two special rapporteurs who visited Algeria in 2023 paid the slightest attention to the grave situation of these detainees on Algerian territory."
"El Cenacolo" Organization denounced the persistence of Polisario's incubator Algeria in turning a blind eye to the serious human rights violations against the residents of the Tindouf camps in southern Algeria, as well as "the failure of the UN mechanisms, led by the UNHCR, to activate its protection mandate under the Geneva Convention."
"The Sahrawi refugees, who live in five communities completely surrounded by the Algerian army, suffer from the most severe forms of repression practiced by the Polisario leadership and the Algerian army, which systematically resort to extrajudicial killings, as evidenced by the recent shooting of 16 Sahrawi youths while trying to leave the camps, as well as the burning of two others alive after Algerian army members poured gasoline on them in cold blood," the organization said.
The organization warned that "enforced disappearance is one of the most common means used by Polisario executioners to silence any voice that dares to expose the serious violations committed by the leadership's militias, as evidenced by the case of the father of Mohamed Salem al-Kouri, who remains unaccounted for since his abduction along with hundreds of Sahrawis who died under torture and were buried in unknown pits on the outskirts of Tindouf, Algeria."
It called on the international community "to pressure Algeria to assume its responsibility for the crimes committed on its territory by its army and Polisario militias against Sahrawis, including revealing the fate of the disappeared and bringing the perpetrators to justice."
