|Municipalities of Lagouira and Bignona Seek to Strengthen Institutional Technical Capacities

The municipalities of Lagouira in Morocco and Bignona in Senegal agreed to strengthen their institutional and technical capacities under a memorandum of understanding signed on Wednesday in Dakar between the two local authorities.

Signed by the presidents of the two municipalities, Abdelattah Ahl Makki and Bacary Diatta, this agreement aims to promote local economic development, encourage cultural, educational, and social exchanges, and facilitate the implementation of joint projects in identified priority areas, as well as contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

It also focuses on the exchange of best educational practices, the promotion of sustainable agriculture, the sharing of experiences in agricultural resource management, the strengthening of community health services, the promotion of local and solidarity-based tourism, and support for local entrepreneurial initiatives.

On this occasion, the president of the Lagouira municipality emphasized that local authorities play crucial constitutional, organizational, and functional roles, especially since they are considered key partners of the state in the design and implementation of development and investment projects at the territorial level.

For Ahl Makki, local authorities, the backbone of Morocco’s decentralization system, are at the heart of economic, social, and cultural development projects. They also play a fundamental role in building local infrastructure and promoting essential services related to the daily lives of citizens.

For his part, the mayor the Senegalese municipality told MAP that the MoU aims to strengthen decentralized cooperation between the two local authorities specifically, and to reinforce the « centuries-old » relations between Morocco and Senegal in general.

In the same vein, an addendum to the partnership agreement between the municipalities of Lagouira and Gueule Tapée-Fass-Colobane (in the Dakar region), signed in 2010, was also signed. The addendum focuses on the exchange of skills, the organization of fairs and markets to facilitate the flow of products, as well as the hosting of joint cultural events and the creation of sociocultural centers.

Morocco’s Ambassador to Senegal, Hassan Naciri, stated that these local initiatives « carry special significance, as they bring our countries and peoples closer together, build strong ties, create bridges, and promote mutual understanding.

In this regard, he highlighted the immense potential for mutually beneficial cooperation between Morocco and Senegal, two brotherly countries. He emphasized that both central and local officials have the responsibility to capitalize on these opportunities, noting that the areas of cooperation span all sectors.

A delegation from the Lagouira Municipality, accompanied by business operators from the Aousserd province, is currently visiting the Senegalese capital, Dakar.
