|Autonomy is the « only honorable solution » to resolve the Sahara issue (Erik Jansen)

Autonomy as a compromise solution is the « only honorable way » to reach a final resolution to the Sahara conflict. Asserted on Wednesday, the former special representative of the UN secretary –General to the Sahara,

Erik Jansen “I was always convinced that the only honorable way to solve the Sahara issue is the autonomy” he asserted at the headquarter of the European parliament during a debate which followed the projection of a documentary called “Polisario: identity of a front” which shed a pertinent and objective light on the regional conflict of the conflict about the Moroccan Sahara. Autonomy is a concept fairly “elastic, which excludes two extremes such as: inclusion and independence” which makes out of it a good solution to the Sahara conflict. “it does offer the Polisario and its supporter ( Algeria) an honorable way out’ he added  .

Relating to his five year mandate the special representative of the UN general- secretary to the Sahara has allowed him to better understand the beginning and end of the conflict  Mr Jenson has mentioned that the challenges of the region are terrorist threats and instability in the Sahel area, and also the feeling of frustration and despair which could push youngsters in Tindouf camps to join terrorist groups, asserting the  urgency to  reach political negotiated solution to the Sahara question.

The former UN  official ,  who emphasizes on the necessity for different parties concerned by the Sahara question  to “ find a compromise” has  recalled that  Morocco has presented in 2007 an autonomy plan , which was qualified by the UNSC and other influential powers,  such as the US and France of «serious and credible”.

Mr Jansen has also mentioned that political and constitutional reforms initiated by Morocco spurred on by King Mohammed VI are ‘extremely encouraging signs” with view to implement the advanced regionalization towards a lasting solution to the Sahara question.

It is worth mentioning that the Sahara conflict named «western” is a conflict imposed on Morocco by Algeria which finances and accommodates one its territory in Tindouf the Polisario front. the later is supported by the Algerian regime claims the creation of a fake state in the Maghreb area .
Such situation obstructs efforts made the international community for an economic integration and regional security, with view to settle once and for all this regional conflict which lasts for four decades. Morocco has proposed an autonomy plan to the Sahara under the Moroccan sovereignty, an initiative open to negotiation which was hailed by the international powers as a serious solution , credible and realist , which is still rejected by both Algeria and the Polisario .

Algeria and the Polisario have been striving for the last four decades to destroy the UN process of settlement of the Sahara conflict, refusing the census of populations sequestered in Tindouf, and insisting to the organization of a referendum of self –determination while the UN itself has concluded the impossibility of organizing it .
