Since the recovery by the motherland of the Sahara region, the Moroccan successive Governments have undertaken major health activities at the provincial level in Laayoune, Dakhla, Smara and Boujdour and recently Aousserd.
These actions concern both health infrastructure and human and financial resources through public health programs. They have helped increase health, including those relating to infant mortality whose rate has seen a dramatic decline in relation to national indicators, amounting to 30 per 1000 (40 per 1000 nationally).
Overall, the goals of health policy are threefold:
• Ensure autonomy of health
• Put health services at the disposal of a large number of people by adapting health services to the specific needs of the region by geographical optimal distribution
• Develop curative and preventive medicine
Good results have been achieved thanks to the sustained development of the sector by the government and the private sector, which helped set up a care balanced service, integrated and distributed equitably throughout the entire territory of the region.
However, further efforts are required. For this reason, development, expansion, reconstruction and renovation projects relating to health facilities are being implemented in these provinces, amounting to 17. Among these projects, 14 are entirely funded through the budget of the Ministry of Health against an overall investment of about 17 million dirhams, 3 other projects are carried out within the framework of the National Initiative for Human Development (INDH) .
