Last Monday, at the United Nations headquarters, The Gambia expressed its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara, as well as its “firm” backing for the Moroccan Autonomy Plan, an initiative described as “serious and credible” and aimed at ending the artificial dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

In New York last Monday, Guinea-Bissau reaffirmed its support for the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty for the Kingdom’s southern provinces. It characterized this consensus-based initiative as a pathway towards a “realistic” solution and the establishment of “lasting peace” in the region.

On Thursday, the Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly adopted its annual resolution on the question of the Moroccan Sahara. The resolution received 152 votes in favour, including Morocco’s, with two votes against and seven abstentions.

Djibouti on Monday reaffirmed, in New York, its support for the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative, welcoming the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 on the Moroccan Sahara.

Security Council Resolution 2797 marked a "significant turning point" in the United Nations’ handling of the Moroccan Sahara issue, "moving from a focus on managing the issue to one of resolving it," emphasized Omar Hilale, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, on Tuesday in New York.
